Overview
This flagship project is mobilising private and public investment and building the capacity of public institutions for the Madagascar's long-term energy future. It is part of the regional Team Europe Initiative Africa EU Green Energy. The EU is supporting Madagascar's renewable energy development to increase sustainable access to electricity for all at the lowest cost, particularly in rural areas, while mobilising private sector financing and expertise, and encouraging entrepreneurship.
Key actions include:
- The development of the Volobe and Sahofika hydroelectric dam. The EU allocates subsidies blended with private and sovereign loans to facilitate the emergence of such major projects to boost the country's hydroelectric potential and significantly increase Madagascar's renewable energy capacity
- The development of key power grid connections, such as the Tamatave/Volobe/Antananarivo and Antananarivo/Sahofika/Antsirabe links, improving electricity distribution across the country
- The construction of decentralised photovoltaic mini-grids
