Overview
This flagship project consists in the development of renewable hydrogen value chain in Kazakhstan. This being done through the implementation of the memorandum of understanding on raw materials, batteries and renewable hydrogen signed between the European Union and Kazakhstan.
Background
This initiative is part of the broader strategic partnership between the European Union and Kazakhstan on raw materials, batteries, and renewable hydrogen, aligned with the Global Gateway Strategy and the REPowerEU plan. It reflects a shared commitment to transition toward cleaner, more resilient economies and reduce dependency on fossil fuels for the economies of the EU and Kazahstan.
The partnership is built around three main pillars:
- Economic and industrial integration in key value chains, notably raw materials, batteries, and renewable hydrogen by identifying joint projects, including in recycling and private investment mobilisationby identifying joint projects, including in recycling and private investment mobilisation. It also prioritises alignment with high environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards to reinforce sustainability and transparency, and supports the modernisation of mining and refining processes through the adoption of new technologies and sustainable practices.
- Increasing the resilience of raw material, battery and renewable hydrogen supply chains through enhancing transparency and information on measures related to investment, operation and exports.
- Closer bilateral cooperation on capacity-building, skills, and research & innovation to support decarbonisation efforts through the use of renewable energy and digitalisation, while advancing the greening of mining operations and the recovery of critical raw materials from industrial mineral waste.
